Raw Materials
10 rd – Espace d’art contemporain, Nice
June – August 2009
The RAW MATERIALS show is based on the specifics of the 10rd - Espace d’art contemporain. Taking into consideration its architectural characteristics, spatial qualities (a room divided in two) as much as material qualities (the white concrete walls, the enamel tiled floors, the wooden beams, etc.), the works interact with each other and with the gallery. It is through this relation to their surroundings that the works expose the transformed matter, transformed by a deceptively natural process or by a physical creative action imposed directly on the matter. The exhibition invites 6 artists to show one of their works in which the creative process itself reveals an interest in matter, in material qualities. Here, raw materials are not considered according to their initial meaning, i.e. a product of nature that has yet to be manufactured, but as a potential material to experiment with and to transform. The 10rd is a new contemporary art space in Nice. Its goal is to support young contemporary creation through the organisation of exhibitions and cultural events. With the aim of promoting wider interest and involvement in art, this friendly and on the fringe meeting point is open to young curators’ projects.

La Chapelle des Fougeretz (35)
For one afternoon only, on the side of a pond, Isabelle Frémin will set up a field of ‘Pouces ’ (‘Thumbs’). Composed of about ten mobile wooden sculptures, the work will become an experimental space for the public. Accompanied by unexpected guides, the visitor will be invited to wander around the installation, meeting singers, actors, visual artists and musicians along the way. This installation will be completed by an outdoor presentation of the artist’s sculptures.
